obama. >> reporter: and like romney, the president sees this debate as a chance to talk to america. >> it's a choice between two different paths for this country. it's a choice between two fundamentally different visions for our nation. >> reporter: the president has a lead in all nine of the key battleground states, including ohio, which begins early balloting today. >> romney's task is difficult because he has to redefine himself as well as redefining the election. >> reporter: an election only 35 days away but still far from over. and the first debate is on the domestic issues that are defining this election. >>> ryan moore in washington. thanks. >>> the candidates for the u.s. senate seat in massachusetts, scott brown and elizabeth warren, debated for the second time last night. the two were combative as they staked out opposite issues from jobs and bringing troops home. david gregory from "meet the press" as moderator, they clashed over brown's claim of partisan independence. >> if he's re-elected, that increases the odds that the republicans will control the senate and that h

. >> reporter: also in virginia, mitt romney's post-debate momentum ran smack right into those breakthrough numbers. >> more and more people have just stopped looking for work. >> reporter: romney tried to spin the unemployment rate. >> the truth is, if the same share of people were participating in the workforce today, on the day the president got elected, the unemployment rate would be around 11%. >> reporter: the president, who spoke before romney, saw that charge coming. >> today's news, certainly is not an excuse to try to talk down the economy, to score a few political points. it's a reminder that this country has come too far to turn back now. >> reporter: but there was more. when the former ceo of general electric took to twitter and the air waves, suggesting the obama campaign cooked the numbers. >> i don't know what the right number is. but i'll tell you, these numbers don't smell right when you think about where the economy is right now. >> reporter: many experts laughed off the charge. but the labor secretary, whose department compiles the monthly report, was not laughing. >> i'

six-pack debate by any stretch. there weren't a lot of bright spots for the president. this was romney's night. everyone on both side saying that. one effective thing the president did, pointed out romney is still short on details on a few key things, health care plan, his tax care plan, as well as as frank-dodd. did he score any points as far as romney being a blank canvas? >> there were a few vulnerabilities when you talked about entitlements, tax plans, he has to square these numbers. he dug himself some holes, that the obama campaign can dig him into even more. it's going to be difficult for him to square those things in a future debate. i think there is possible areas of opportunity there. this was not something that even the most dedicated partisans can paint as a good night for president obama. >> you know it's a bad night if opinions are that uniform, huh? >> exactly. the next presidential debate, tuesday, october 16th. >> thank you, rick. >> thanks. >> thank you, guys. >>> our coverage of the debate does not end here. we'll take you live to denver, during "america this morning

not defend his economic record on wednesday night. that's why governor romney won the debate. nothing lying had nothing to do with it. >> yesterday, big news came out and it was a head scratcher for everyone from economists to pundits to politician and these were the unemployment numbers. here is what was confusing. only 114,000 jobs were added in the month of september. that's less than we need to keep up -- keep pace even with population growth. >> what do we need about 200,000. >> yes and 114 is considered anemic. however, somehow the unemployment rate dropped from 8.1 all the way down to 7.8 and that has left economists saying how did this happen? >> how in the world did this happen because 873,000 more people had jobs according to another survey that was a part of this thing. so to make sense of all of this for us this morning is economists and proffer of international business at the university of maryland peter morris is i is joining us this morning. >> hey, peter. >> we needed a smarter person to join us this morning. seriously last night on facebook and twitter people just really c

is playing mr. obama in romney's mock debate sessions. with the two candidates off the trail tuesday, their number two men picked up the slack. campaigning in north carolina vice president biden drew some attention with these comments, discussing the gop ticket's tax plan. >> how they can justify raising taxes on the middle class that's been buried the last four years. >> reporter: the romney campaign pounced on the word buried. campaigning in iowa, paul ryan fired back. >> vice president biden just today said that the middle class over the last four years has been, quote, buried. we agree. that means we need to stop digging by electing mitt romney the next president of the united states. >> reporter: later, the vice president did some damage control, clarifying his remarks. >> the middle class was buried by the policies of romney and ryan supported. >> reporter: 24 hours before the start time of tonight's debate late tuesday, conservatives began circulating a 2007 speech by then candidate obama speaking to an african-american audience about victims of hurricane katrina. fox news hos

no access to who the donors are. mitt romney has said in, um, one of the republican debates that he would be for, in his ideal future system, um, the super pacs would merge with his campaign, anybody could give him unlimited amounts of money, but there would be immediate disclosure to -- so the people would know and be able to track any concern about the appearance of corruption. my guess is that's sort of next place to go to. and in this age the sec is a particularly dysfunctional body. trevor can tell you more -- [laughter] the than me, but, you know there is no good proportion mechanism we have. we've had for a while for most of these things in any real time, and also the disclosure mechanisms, though they're improving, remain far behind what is possible today. it should be the case that as soon as they're cashing the check, there's no reason that that money can't show up in a database that is posted online, um, from any group that's spending money and influence. so that would be my guess of where you go next. i think the other political thing that will happen here is that, um, whateve
